Sheffield Wednesday manager Garry Monk has revealed that Tom Lees is not expected to be out for action for a prolonged period of time despite suffering a setback last week.

The defender, who is currently absent due to a hamstring injury (via The Star), was not involved in the Owls' clash with Huddersfield Town yesterday.

In what was Monk's first game in charge of the club since taking over at Hillsborough earlier this month, Wednesday made a superb start to the clash as Steven Fletcher opened the scoring in the 10th minute.

Although Terence Kongolo went close for Huddersfield after the interval, the Owls managed to double their advantage as Sam Winnall headed home from Barry Bannan's corner.

With the Terriers unable to respond to this setback, Wednesday secured their fourth league victory of the season.

Speaking to The Star after the Huddersfield clash about Lees' injury, Monk said: "He was very close to this game, but he just had a little bit of a setback this week.

"There is no point in risking him because he is an important player for us.

"We want him to be out on the pitch but I thought the two centre-halves Julian [Borner] and Dominic [Iorfa] were fantastic [against Hudderfield] and dealt with things well.

"But hopefully it won't too soon for Tom [Lees]."

Wednesday will be looking to make it back-to-back victories in the Championship when they face Fulham at Hillsborough next Saturday.

The Verdict

Although the Owls were able to keep their first league clean-sheet of the season yesterday against Huddersfield in Lees' absence, the fact that the defender is not expected to be out for too long is unquestionably good news for the club.

A mainstay in Wednesday's back-four during the previous campaign, the 28-year-old will be aiming to help his side launch a  push for a top-six finish this year.

With 312 second-tier appearances to his name, Lees knows exactly what it takes to thrive at this particular level and thus could emerge as a key player for the Owls over the coming months providing that he stays fit.
