Speaking to LUTV, Garry Monk has insisted Leeds United need to build on the success the club has had in the Sky Bet Championship this season and be ready for a tougher division next year.

Leeds have fallen agonisingly short of finishing in the Championship’s Play-Offs this season, with Monk’s side set to finish seventh in the table after Sunday’s final game against Wigan Athletic.

However, the former Swansea City boss is insistent that Leeds cannot stand still and must improve ahead of the 2017/18 campaign, he said: “You have seen this season how competitive the Championship is and it is only going to get tougher, we have to be ready.

“We need a clear plan and we need to build on the foundations and progression made this season.”

Despite Monk’s success at Elland Road this season, his future at Leeds is in doubt, with the club yet to renegotiate his existing contract, which runs out in June.

Giving a brief update on his future, Monk said: “There has been a lot of speculation about my future and I will sit down with the owners after the Wigan game.”

Monk’s side lost four from their seven fixtures in April, and are without a victory in their last four Championship games, something they will be looking to amend against Wigan on Sunday.
