Sheffield Wednesday manager Garry Monk has suggested that defender Moses Odubajo does still have a potential future with the Owls following his recent return to first team involvement.

Monk was thought to be willing to allow Odubajo to leave the club last month, with the 26-year-old kept out of action and seeing Osaze Urhoghide picked in the side head of him during an eight-game spell in the cold for the right-back.

However, Odubajo has managed to reclaim his place back in the side over the last few weeks having impressed Monk in training, which has seen him start the Owls’ last three games, but that has also been somewhat due to injuries suffered to both Morgan Fox and Liam Palmer who could both move ahead of him in the pecking order again.

Speaking to the Sheffield Star, Monk suggested that Odubajo’s attitude in training has seen him earn his chance to impress in the side over the last few weeks, and insisted that the right-back could still have a future with the club, saying: "He’s been training hard and that’s your job as a professional footballer, to be ready.

"The door is never closed for anyone, your performances will dictate what your opportunities are and he’s done very well."

The verdict

Given Odubajo was being frozen out of the side only a few weeks ago and potentially looking like he could even have played his last game for the Owls, it has been a remarkable turnaround from the 26-year-old in the last few games showing he deserves a lot of credit for continuing to work hard on his game.

Monk has been seemingly unconvinced by the defender, who has made some vital errors at times this season that have cost the Owls, but Odubajo appears to be slowly winning the Wednesday manager round and he could still play a key role during the rest of the campaign.

Odubajo was potentially affected more than most players by Steve Bruce’s sudden exit from Sheffield Wednesday in the summer, after he had brought the defender to the club, and it is understandable that the right-back might have needed some time to reflect on that.

However, Odubajo now seems ready to push for a starting role on a consistent basis now, and it will be interesting to see if Monk continues to select him now that both Fox and Palmer are getting back to full fitness from their respective recent injuries.
