Garry Monk issues clear message on Birmingham future

Birmingham City boss Garry Monk insists that he is not thinking about leaving the club after reports suggested he is a leading contender for the West Brom job.

The Baggies have appointed Jimmy Shan as a caretaker for the remainder of the campaign but will be on the lookout for a permanent manager in the summer, with the Daily Mail suggesting Monk is a target.

However, the former Leeds chief dismissed the rumours when speaking to the Express & Star ahead of Blues’ final league game of the season on Sunday at Reading.

We are back in silly season again, summer rumours. I have told you from the start I don’t deal with speculation. I don’t want to leave here, I want to make sure I can help this club move forward.

My intention from the start – and still is at this point, is to be here and help this club move forward. We have just put a whole year’s worth of work in, I want to be able to build and move that forward.”

Whether his stance would change if Albion secure promotion to the Premier League through the play-offs remains to be seen.

The Verdict

This is a message that Blues fans will love as Monk has done a terrific job at St. Andrew’s and they need to keep him at the club for years to come.

Even though it’s a pretty normal message from a manager in his situation, you do get the feeling that he enjoys his current job but he has jumped ship before.

If Albion don’t win promotion then Blues have nothing to worry about but an approach if they win the play-offs would make things interesting.
