New Sheffield Wednesday boss Garry Monk insists he won't be getting carried away despite enjoying a perfect start to life in charge of the Owls.

The ex-Birmingham boss celebrated a win in his first game in charge against Yorkshire rivals Huddersfield on Sunday, with goals from Steven Fletcher and Sam Winnall sealing an impressive 2-0 victory.

Yet, Monk made it clear when speaking to the official site that he will still be demanding more for the team as he prepares for his Hillsborough bow against promotion favourites Fulham this weekend.

"It’s not about me, it’s about this squad, these players and they came close a few seasons ago. I want to help them get back to the levels they’ve been at before and achieve something good.

"There will be ups and downs, we will not be going over the top because we have won one game, there is a lot of work ahead of us. There are really good things that they have done so far but I can see a lot of improvements that need to be done as well."

The verdict

The fans will love this message from Monk as it shows he is completely focused on the task ahead of him and won't be getting ahead of himself after a good start.

The manager will surely have been delighted with the assured display his side put in, but as he states, it's about doing that consistently and there's no doubt they will need to find another gear if they are to beat Fulham.

That's the challenge now and it's down to the players to continue to understand the way the new boss wants them to play.
