Birmingham City manager Garry Monk has revealed that Isaac Vassell has begun training again as he steps up his return from injury.

The former Luton striker suffered a significant knee ligament injury in October last season and went on to miss the remainder of the campaign.

It was a bitter blow for the 24-year old who had just got himself in the team and had impressed with his pace and movement up top.

And, after the lengthy lay-off, Monk has delivered an update on his situation.

"Isaac Vassell is back in training, he is doing parts of sessions each week. Everyone is delighted to see him back out on the pitch but we need to do right by him, we can't afford to rush him and have any kind of setbacks," he told Blues' media.

Yet, the former Swansea boss is not going to rush the player back and believes it could be six weeks or so until he is back out on the pitch.

"He's filtered back into training and we will assess him as we go along. I don't think he will be ready until after the international break next month."

The Verdict

This is great news for Blues as Vassell could be a very big player for them, particularly in the style of play that Monk adopts.

However, it's important not to rush him back to fitness and Monk clearly recognises that going by his comments.

It's about showing patience with him and hoping that he can rediscover the form that saw him earn his move to St. Andrew's and win a place in the team.
