Sheffield Wednesday boss Garry Monk has revealed that his decision to take off Steven Fletcher at half-time on Saturday was not because the striker has suffered another injury.

The Scotland international has been vital to the Owls this season, scoring 13 goals in 25 games, whilst he has also been crucial as a focal point for the team.

Therefore, he was sorely missed when he picked up an injury in early January that ruled him out for the next eight games.

So, there was understandable concerns when Fletcher was taken off against Derby, even though Wednesday were 3-0 down after a disastrous display.

However, Monk told the Sheffield Star that the 32-year-old will be fine moving forward.

"You make the changes, Fletcher’s one, I spoke to him just before half-time and he was tired, obviously Steven isn’t fully fit and obviously he’s come back in a needs must situation. That was more precautionary."

That means the former Wolves man could be involved during the week when Wednesday host Manchester City in the FA Cup.

The verdict

This is good news for Sheffield Wednesday as there was understandable concern when Fletcher went off at half-time, even if he hadn't had the best game - like most of his teammates.

He is crucial to the team in the way he leads the line and his goal return this season has been superb.

So, Monk needs Fletcher to stay fit for the remainder of the season and he will be crucial if they are to turn this alarming run of form around.
