Sheffield Wednesday manager Garry Monk could make a move on his former club Birmingham City as he looks to sort out his backroom team at Hillsborough.

Monk has thus far failed to bring anyone with him as he relies on the knowledge and coaching of the likes of Lee Bullen.

However, speaking in the Athletic's Q&A forum for the Owls, journalist Nancy Frostick revealed that Monk could well look at bringing James Beattie to Sheffield as he looks to build a coaching team around him to lead the Owls to a run for the top six.

Beattie was one of Monk's top men at St Andrews and has slowly built a reputation for himself in the coaching world after a successful playing career which yielded England caps and plenty of Premier League goals.

The former Southampton striker is well known in Sheffield as it is thanks to his time with Sheffield United, but according to Frostick, Beattie and Birmingham could be open to doing a deal with the Owls.

"Beattie looks the most likely. Apparently Birmingham would be very receptive to an offer/package for him. Think once things have settled we might see some sort of movement on a new recruit." she said in response to a question from a fan.

Beattie has followed Monk around in his managerial career, with spells at Swansea, Leed, and Middlesbrough all preceeding their time together at Birmingham.

The Verdict

This could be a smart move from Monk and one which could benefit the Owls over the course of the season.

There has to be more freshening up sometimes than just a change of manager, so bringing in a coach of the calibre of Beattie could be the ideal bit of business for the club.

Beattie has proven he can do the business and is obviously someone Monk trusts, so it makes sense overall.
