Garry Monk is actively looking to strengthen his Middlesbrough squad this summer, and has already made some impressive signings, bringing Jonny Howson, Cyrus Christie and Martin Braithwaite to the Riverside Stadium.

Another player who could be moving to the North East in the coming weeks is Sheyi Ojo, with both Boro and Newcastle United in competition to sign the Liverpool man.

Recent reports suggested that Boro were leading the race to sign the 20-year-old on-loan, but latest developments indicate that Newcastle are preparing a massive £10m bid for Ojo.

If those reports are correct, Boro should abandon their attempts to sign Ojo and pursue other targets, with the money involved in any potential deal reaching an eye-watering level.

Ojo is largely unproven and there are no guarantees that he will be a success at the Riverside Stadium.

During loan spells with Wigan Athletic and Wolverhampton Wanderers, Ojo made a combined total of 30 appearances, failing to impress either the fans at the DW Stadium or Molineux in his short time with their respective clubs.

Whilst Boro remain likely to only pursue a loan deal for Ojo, signing him would still be a risk, as his previous spells in the Championship have not been the most encouraging.

In the last 12-months, Ojo has made just two senior appearances, which both came in the FA Cup for Liverpool.

There is little doubt that Monk’s transfer business so far has been excellent. However, the 38-year-old should abandon his attempts to sign Ojo, as his arrival is too much of a risk for a club in desperate need of bouncing straight back to the Premier League.
