Nottingham Forest legend Garry Birtles has praised the versatility of Ben Osborn and insists that being considered a ‘utility’ player is no bad thing.

Naturally a midfielder, Osborn has played in both holding and advanced roles this season and featured at left-back against Bristol City last time out.

And, writing for the Nottingham Post, Birtles reckons Osborn’s ability to play in several positions will significantly benefit Mark Warburton’s men over the season. “Players like Ben Osborn are so vital to any team. Don’t underestimate how valuable it is for Nottingham Forest to have someone like him in the squad.”

It’s good to have people like him, who you can rely on. Every squad needs players like that, players who have the ability to slot in to various different positions.”

Forest face a run of four games in nine days and the former European Cup winner believes Osborn’s versatility will be particularly crucial during this hectic period.

Especially at this time of year, when injuries start to mount up and you’re going into the busy Christmas period, you’re going to need people to take on different roles.”

The Verdict

Garry Birtles assessment is completely fair on Osborn although the player no doubt wants to nail down a place in his favourite position.

Nevertheless, Mark Warburton will be delighted that the academy graduate gives him cover in various positions and that will be vital, particularly at this stage of the season.

For Osborn, if he wants to lose this tag it’s all about delivering quality performances in his favourite position that means he has to get picked.
