Future of Sheffield Wednesday shot-stopper uncertain after latest snub

The future of Sheffield Wednesday goalkeeper Jake Kean looks uncertain after being left out of the Owls’ pre-season tour of Portugal, according to The Sheffield Star.

The 26-year-old only moved to Hillsborough last year following a short spell at Norwich City, in which time he failed to make a first team appearance for the Canaries and instead was shipped out on loan to Colchester United and Swindon Town.

And it has been much the familiar story for Kean since his arrival at Sheffield Wednesday, with the shot-stopper also failing to appear in Carlos Carvalhal’s starting eleven last term, before eventually going out on loan to Mansfield Town in the December of last year.

And if the writing wasn’t on the wall for the 26-year-old then, it certainly is now as recent reports suggest that he has been left out of Carvalhal’s squad for their pre-season tour of Portugal.

And with his contract up at the end of next season, Kean’s future at Hillsborough is far from certain, especially as goalkeepers Kieren Westwood, Joe Wildsmith, and Cameron Dawson are all on the tour, and thus clearly well ahead of Kean in the Owls’ pecking order.

Carvalhal’s men have secured two successive play-off finishes but were unable to get over the line on both occasions, and will thus be seeking that extra bit of quality to take into next season so they can finally end their wait for Premier League football.

However, it doesn’t look like Kean will be part of those plans, but what the future holds for the 26-year-old very much remains to be seen.
