Cardiff City manager Mick McCarthy is under consideration to be the new Celtic boss, as the Scottish champions search for Neil Lennon's replacement.

The Glasgow giants have endured a season to forget so far, with Lennon leaving the club in the week.

Whilst assistant John Kennedy is set to take charge until the end of the campaign, the process to find a new boss will already have taken place, and it had been suggested that McCarthy is on the shortlist.

And, The Athletic reporter Daniel Taylor has seemed to confirm Celtic's interest in McCarthy, as he stated those reports 'have some foundation'.

It's no surprise that the 62-year-old is attracting attention, as he has done a fantastic job with the Bluebirds since taking over last month.

A sixths successive win against Bournemouth in the week lifted the Welsh outfit into the play-off places, something that seemed unthinkable when McCarthy was appointed.

The former Ireland boss does have a history with Celtic, having featured for the club in the late 80s during his playing career.

The verdict

This is a worrying position for Cardiff to be in, as McCarthy only signed a short-term deal.

Having said that, you would imagine if they do win promotion, then he will want a crack at the Premier League, but if they don't, the appeal of Celtic to the Irishman could be too much.

McCarthy's only focus right now will be on Cardiff and trying to take them up, but this could be something that's revisited in the summer when the manager will have big decisions to make on his future.
