Tottenham are 'optimistic' of winning the race to sign Sam Johnstone in the summer on a free transfer.

The West Brom keeper is out of contract in the coming months at The Hawthorns and he has made it clear that he won't be signing a new deal.

Therefore, Steve Bruce has left the stopper out in recent games, as Albion look ahead to next season, whilst Johnstone will have a decision to make on his future, with several clubs, including Manchester United, having been credited with an interest in the England international.

However, backing up a story revealed by FLW last week, the Telegraph have confirmed that Spurs are leading the chase to land the keeper.

Bringing in a new backup to Hugo Lloris is likely to be a priority for Antonio Conte, with the Londoners unlikely to take up the option to sign Italian keeper Pierluigi Gollini in the summer.

Johnstone would also help Spurs on the European homegrown player front, something which could become an issue for Conte if, as expected, they quality for Europe next season.

The verdict

Johnstone has shown over the years that he is a very good keeper, so whoever picks him up on a free will be doing some very good business.

The chance to move to Spurs is going to appeal, even if the 29-year-old knows he is unlikely to be in the first XI initially, although he will still get some game time in the cup competitions.

Either way, West Brom have already started planning for life without Johnstone and a summer move is going to suit all parties.
