Blackburn are having to make a case to the EFL as they hope to sign Lewis O'Brien from Nottingham Forest.

Rovers thought they had won the race to bring the midfielder in when a deal was agreed with the Premier League side but it wasn't finalised before the 11pm deadline on Tuesday night.

Since then, it's been a case of waiting and seeing if it would be ratified, in what would be a major coup for Jon Dahl Tomasson's side.

However, reporter Alan Nixon has confirmed this is one that could drag on, as he revealed that the registration was rejected as one part of the paperwork arrived late.

Yet, Rovers are stating that the hold up came when discussing the permanent aspect of the deal, which would be triggered if they won promotion.

As a result, they are hoping that the move can be signed off and they have until 9am on Friday to make their case to the FA.

Once they have explained the details, the FA will then make a decision, so it could come any time this week.

The verdict

This will be hugely frustrating for both clubs and O'Brien as it's clear the player has no immediate future at Forest, so he will be desperate to get out and play this season.

But, the rules are the rules and if the documents weren't sent in on time then this is not going to be allowed to go through, as we've seen in the past.

So, this is one to monitor in the coming days and it would be a real shame for all parties if the transfer hasn't gone through.
