Rangers' bid for Swansea City attacker Morgan Whittaker fell "well short" of the amount of money the latter's hierarchy wants for the 21-year-old this month, according to the BBC.

Whittaker has attracted interest from several sides following a bright first half of the season at Plymouth Argyle, with the player previously looking set to spend the whole season with the Pilgrims but being recalled by the Swans this month.

However, he could potentially be sold on this month rather than utilised by Russell Martin, with Michael Beale's side known to be one club that are keen on getting a deal over the line for him.

But they aren't alone in this race, with sides from the Premier League and Championship also believed to be weighing up a potential move for him after seeing him record nine goals and seven assists in 25 league appearances for the Pilgrims.

And they could potentially fancy their chances of overtaking the Scottish Premiership outfit in the race to secure his signature after Beale's men had an offer rejected.

Even though their first offer fell considerably short of what the Welsh side are seeking for Whittaker, the Gers are reported to have retained their interest in him with Norwich City's Todd Cantwell also a target.

The Verdict:

It will be interesting to see how much the Swans hold out for because his contract doesn't expire until the summer of 2025 and with that, Martin's side could charge a very high price for him.

The Swans haven't been afraid to cash in on valuable assets before with Flynn Downes leaving in the summer, so it wouldn't be a surprise if he is sold this month, though they can't afford to leave themselves short either.

With Michael Obafemi potentially departing this month as well, the duo's firepower will need to be replaced and they should have plenty of money at their disposal to bring in these replacements.

The Gers should be looking to pay over the odds to bring Whittaker in considering he's only 21, with the player only likely to improve on the pitch and his financial valuation only likely to increase with that.

But it's currently unclear whether they have the funds to make a deal happen considering Beale's side are also looking to finalise a move for Norwich's Cantwell, who will probably cost a fee to bring in considering he's still under contract at Carrow Road.
