Sunderland boss Phil Parkinson has won the League One Manager of the Month award for January, after overseeing an impressive month that reignited the Black Cats’ promotion hopes.

It was a tough start to life at the Stadium of Light for Parkinson, with Sunderland falling to mid-table and facing a severe backlash for not winning promotion back to the Championship at the second time of asking.

However, Parkinson oversaw a stunning start to 2020, which led to Sunderland picking up 14 points from the 18 that were available to them, including an impressive 4-0 victory over high-flying Wycombe Wanderers.

Despite defeat to Portsmouth at the start of February, Sunderland now sit seventh in the League One standings, just two points adrift of the play-offs places and five off automatic promotion.

There’s no denying that the outstanding form over January has led to that positive look on the table, with Parkinson rightly award for it with the Manager of the Month award.
