Fulham have completed the signing of goalkeeper Jordan Archer on a free transfer following his departure from Oxford United earlier this month, the club has confirmed.

Archer has joined the promotion-chasing Cottagers on an initial contract until the end of the season, with Fulham also holding the option to extend the former Millwall man's services by a further 12 months.

The 26-year-old was left without a club following his release from the Lions over the summer, but he then joined Oxford on a one-month contract in December, during which time he kept three clean sheets in his six League One outings.

It now appears that Archer's performances caught the attention of Fulham who have added the goalkeeper to their ranks to provide competition for the likes of Marek Rodak, Marcus Bettinelli and Magnus Norman.

The Tottenham academy product arrives at Craven Cottage with a wealth of Championship experience under his belt following his 69 second-tier appearances for the Lions, and he now bolsters Fulham's squad ahead of their promotion bid this term.

The Verdict

This seems a strange signing given Fulham appear to be fairly well-stocked in the goalkeeping department, so this could mean that the Cottagers are expecting one of their stoppers to depart the club later this month.

Bettinelli seems the most likely candidate to leave the Cottage given he has recently lost his place in the Fulham side, and the 27-year-old's potential departure means that Archer's arrival seems like a sensible move.

It will be interesting to see whether Archer is able to challenge Rodak for his starting spot during the remainder of the campaign, but it would be a big surprise if Archer is able to establish himself as the first choice between the sticks.
