According to The Chronicle, Newcastle United striker Dwight Gayle is on Fulham's radar this January.

Fulham failed with a bid to sign Gayle in the summer transfer window as Rafa Benitez was not sure he would be able to land a replacement in time.

But the Cottagers could make a fresh approach this month.

And they would fund a move for Gayle by selling star asset and former Newcastle United target Tom Cairney, who is attracting Premier League interest.

Cairney had a remarkable season in 2016/17, helping Fulham reach the play-offs, and he was the subject of a £20m bid from the Magpies in the summer.

Now West Brom are in for the Fulham skipper - who has been below par this term due to ongoing injury concerns.

If the Baggies snap up Cairney for between £12m and £15m, then Fulham will launch a £15m for Gayle.

The 27-year-old is a proven goal scorer in the Championship after firing Newcastle to promotion last season with 23 league goals, despite spending a significant period of time out injured.

However, the former Crystal Palace star - who enjoyed a meteoric rise from non-league to Premier League football - has not featured as much this season for Newcastle and could be sold this month if a replacement comes in.

The Verdict

Dwight Gayle at £15m could prove to be a very shrewd piece of business for Fulham looking forward. In the current inflated market, spending £15m on a proven Championship goal scorer is the norm. At the age of 27, the Cottagers could get a good several years out of the poacher and this could help seal promotion back to the Premier League.
