Fulham are interested in a move for Newcastle United striker Dwight Gayle this summer, a report from The Chronicle has revealed.
It was been a frustrating campaign for Gayle at St James’ Park during the 2020/21 season, with the 31-year-old making just 18 league appearances, scoring once, for Steve Bruce’s side.
The Cottagers were credited with an interest in Gayle back in the January transfer window, and it now seems as though that remains the case, despite their relegation from the Premier League at the end of last season.
According to this latest update, Fulham are still keen on Gayle, although it seems they may not have it easy in securing a deal for the striker.
It is thought that Newcastle are set to announce a new three-year contract for Gayle imminently, which will secure his future with the Magpies until the end of the 2023/24 season.
Which club did Fulham sign each of these 25 players from?
In total, Gayle, who spent the 2018/19 on loan in the Championship with West Brom from Newcastle, has made 113 appearances in all competitions for the North East club, scoring 34 goals in that time.
I do think that this would be a very good signing for Fulham if they are able to pull it off.
With the future of Aleksandar Mitrovic seemingly set to be the subject of much speculation this summer, and Josh Maja only on loan at Craven Cottage, it does seem as though they may need to add to their attacking ranks during the market.
Given his proven ability to score the goals in the Championship from his time with the likes of Newcastle and West Brom, Gayle could be a decent candidate to fill that role, and he would surely relish the opportunity of more game time following a frustrating few years at St James’.
However, with Newcastle seemingly set to hand Gayle that new contract, it may be hard for Fulham to get this one done, since Newcastle will be in a strong position to negotiate any offers that do come in for him.
