The 28-year-old is without a club after being released by the Trotters this week and Forest have moved quickly to to hold talks with the former Manchester City and Leicester defender.

Mills underwent a medical at Forest this weekend but Fulham are keen to muscle in and steal the defender before he signs a contract at the City Ground.

The Reds are under a transfer embargo, meaning they can only sign free agents and loans and are restricted on what wages they can offer.

Mills started his career at Southampton before joining Manchester City in 2006. He made just two appearances for the Citizens and left to join Doncaster Rovers.

He later had spells at Reading and Leicester.

The defender made 87 appearances for Bolton, scoring six goals.
