Brighton and Hove Albion are targeting a deal for David Button this summer, with Chris Hughton looking to complete a £4m deal for the goalkeeper this week.

The Sun are reporting that Brighton are looking to add a new goalkeeper to their squad this summer, with Hughton eyeing a £4m deal for Fulham’s Button.

The goalkeeper is out of favour at Craven Cottage, with Slavisa Jokanovic preferring Marcus Bettinelli during Fulham’s promotion-winning 2017/18 campaign.

29-year-old Button started the season as Fulham’s first choice, making 21 appearances, with 20 of those coming in the Championship.

However, the goalkeeper’s last appearance came in the FA Cup on January 6th, with Jokanovic then turning to Bettinelli and putting his faith in the 26-year-old, who helped Fulham to promotion via the play-offs.

Button has spent the last two years at Craven Cottage, having arrived in the summer of 2016.

He featured on 40 occasions during the 2015/16 campaign, also helping Fulham finish in the top-six of the Championship.

Hughton hopes to secure a deal to take Button to Brighton by the end of the week.

The Verdict

Button is a good goalkeeper, who finds himself in a situation at Fulham where an exceptionally talented goalkeeper is ahead of him.

Should he move to Brighton, Button will again find himself playing the understudy, so will want assurances that there is a chance he can challenge for a starting berth.

At 29, Button is the perfect age for a goalkeeper and arguably heading into his peak.

If Fulham lose the goalkeeper, who is an excellent back-up, ahead of their Premier League return, it will be a blow.
