Championship new-boys Fulham are reportedly eyeing a move for Newcastle United striker Dwight Gayle.

According to the Daily Star, the Cottagers are keen on landing the former Crystal Palace man as a move away for Aleksandar Mitrovic edges ever closer.

Gayle smashed in an impressive 23 goals last season during a loan spell with West Brom, and Cottagers manager Scott Parker will have taken note of his ability to find the back of the net in the Championship as he seeks an immediate return to the top flight.

The 28-year-old has never quite settled long-term at any club he has moved too, with spells at Crystal Palace and Newcastle both failing to yield the kind of success that Gayle might have expected to see after his impressive goalscoring form previously with Peterborough United.

Fulham are keen on signing a new striker with Serbian Mitrovic set to seal a move to Real Betis, and Gayle could well be open to a move back to London following his poor spell in the north east with the Magpies.

Newcastle manager Rafa Benitez is clearly open to the idea of Gayle leaving the club for pastures new, with the Spaniard quick to ship Gayle out at the start of last season.

The Verdict

What a superb signing this would be for Fulham, especially if Mitrovic does move on and find a new club.

Gayle is tailor made for the Championship and his goalscoring record backs that up perfectly.

If Fulham can land Gayle, you can expect them to be there or thereabouts come the end of the season.
