Following defeat to Southend United on Saturday, and the lacklustre performance that saw Pompey go 2-0 down inside 15-minutes, I find myself looking for answers in Pompey's turn in form.

Last season Pompey won the league with some of the best football I've seen from them since the Premier League days.

High quality, fast paced football with the ball on the floor, keeping possession, in a style that won Paul Cook's side the League Two title.

The Fratton faithful were rocked just weeks after winning the league, as manager Paul Cook moved up to Wigan, with the Blues replacing him with former Wolves and Milwall boss, Kenny Jackett.

Now I'm a big fan of Kenny Jackett and have liked his youthful approach to the Portsmouth squad this season, however, after the lack of activity in the January transfer window and the turn in the form that saw Pompey knocking on the door of the League One play-offs, I'm starting to wonder if they could do with the experience of the Pompey old guard from last season.

Gary Roberts, Carl Baker, Michael Doyle and Noel Hunt are just a few names that were moved on by Kenny Jackett with no real chance to impress at the start of the season, whilst Drew Talbot, Michael Smith, Kyle Bennett, Milan Lalkovic and Curtis Main have since all departed as well.

Gareth Evans, Conor Chaplin, Kal Naismith and Danny Rose haven't been featured nearly as much under Jackett, with only the centre-half partnership of Christian Burgess and Matt Clarke surviving under the former Wolves boss.

However, the quality of replacement has been pretty poor with a number of loan signings including Tareiq Holmes-Dennis (who got injured on the opening day of the season), Matt Kennedy, Stuart O'Keefe, Stephen Henderson (who also got injured on his debut following his loan-move), Anton Walkes, Conor Ronan (who has barely had a look-in despite impressing), and Sylvain Deslandes.

Last season the squad had such a great bond and chemistry and that was obviously rocked by the unexpected departure of Paul Cook, and one of the stars of the season, Enda Stevens, making a move to Sheffield United. But I'll never understand why Jackett didn't give an opportunity to the more experienced players before shifting them on - they may not have had the energy or pace of the current youthful squad, but they certainly wouldn't have made some of these defensive mistakes that see Pompey without a clean sheet in 10 games.

Of course I'm not suggesting that Pompey get rid of Jackett, as I think he needs at least another season to really pull together the squad that he wants - and if the South-Coast side finish mid-table following promotion, then that has to be a great achievement, but I feel like this squad has been bodged and forced together like a jigsaw piece forced in to the wrong space!
