Sheffield Wednesday boss Jos Luhukay will be sweating over the fitness of youngster Ash Baker, who was ruled out of Wales Under 21's Euro 2019 qualifier against Switzerland.

It is believed that Baker was absent from the squad due an ankle injury that Sheffield Wednesday will now be concerned will keep him out for their match against Middlesbrough, on Friday in front of the Sky Sports cameras.

Baker has already made five starts for Luhukay's side in his breakthrough season for the Owls who are chasing a play-off place, and are currently in sixth position in the Championship.

His potential is evident and he has made himself a crucial member of Jos Luhukay's team after making his debut in the final game of the 2017-2018 season, where he was part of the team that thumped Norwich City 5-1 at Hillsborough.

The Welsh youth side did end their qualifying campaign on a positive note without Baker, as they beat Switzerland 3-1 to finish fourth in their qualifying group.

Baker has been capped four times for Wales at Under 21's level and is sure to be aiming for a call up to Ryan Giggs' senior side in the near future.

The Verdict:

Baker has really proved himself in the Championship this season and will be a vital member of Jos Luhukay's side as the festive period approaches.

The 21-year-old is likely to feature heavily during the busy Christmas schedule with rotation in the Sheffield Wednesday starting XI likely to occur, to keep the side fresh.

If Baker can continue to impress, then he will be a regular in the starting XI but he will have to make the most of his chances with Sheffield Wednesday in excellent form recently, which has seen them rise into the play-off positions.
