Pontus Jansson has been handed a one-match suspension following an outburst aimed at referee Jeremy Simpson after Leeds United’s 1-1 draw with Brentford earlier in the month.

Leeds had snatched a 1-1 draw against the Bees thanks to Jansson’s header, but the game was controversial, with Simpson awarding Brentford a penalty after a Bailey Peacock-Farrell challenge on Ollie Watkins.

In a Sky Sports interview after the game Jansson challenged the performance of the officials, using bad language, which he refused to apologise for.

After an FA charge, Leeds have confirmed that Jansson has accepted a one-match suspension, which will rule him out of tomorrow night’s clash with Ipswich Town at Elland Road.

Leeds’ statement touches on how they feel a fine or written warning would have been more appropriate, listing their thoughts before adding that the club are now set to review their post match interview procedures.

Jansson was likely to miss tomorrow’s clash with Ipswich regardless, due to the birth of his first child, but his absence will be a blow for Leeds.

The 27-year-old has made 10 appearances so far this season, scoring once.

Gaetano Berardi, who featured at right-back in Saturday’s defeat against Blackburn Rovers, is likely to move into central defence alongside Liam Cooper.

The Verdict

The clash with Brentford was controversial, with Jansson’s post match incident one of many talking points.

The FA have made an example of the centre-back, but it’s clear to see that Leeds aren’t impressed with the outcome.

In terms of tomorrow’s clash with Ipswich, Jansson wasn’t likely to feature, but his absence from the squad is still a blow.
