Bristol City summer signing Joe Williams could reportedly be sidelined for 12 weeks due to a persistent injury issue, while there are also concerns over the fitness of Nathan Baker and Liam Walsh.

The Robins get their season underway on the 5th of September by facing Exeter City at Ashton Gate in the first round of the EFL Cup.

It looks as though Dean Holden could be forced to field a weakened team against the Grecians as he will be missing at least four players due to international duty, while there are concerns over the fitness of a number of others.

According to a report from the Bristol Post, both Williams and Walsh are suffering from knocks and Baker was forced off early into a pre-season clash with Aston Villa on Wednesday.

It is understood that some sources are suggesting that Williams could be set to miss 12 weeks due to his injury, which is carried over from his time with the Latics.

There is better news when it comes to Walsh, who is expected to return to full fitness soon.

The clash with Exeter will be Holden's first as head coach. The 40-year-old spent four years as Lee Johnson's assistant but was appointed earlier this month following his sacking.

Can you name where each of these 14 ex-Bristol City players are playing now?

The Verdict

Losing Williams for an extended period before the season has even begun would be a massive blow for the Robins and fans of the club will no doubt be waiting nervously for some clarification from the club.

The defensive midfielder looks a very shrewd signing – adding some tenacity and bite to their midfield – and they'll want him on the pitch as much as possible.

Given the injury issues he's had in recent years, it's a worry to see Baker forced off this early in the season as well.

Some concerning signs early on for the Ashton Gate faithful.
