Sheffield Wednesday are aiming to have their new manager in place by the start of the new Championship season, according to the Sheffield Star.

The search for the next Owls boss is thought to be well underway following Steve Bruce's departure to Newcastle United earlier this month, with Wednesday remaining open-minded about the identity of Bruce's successor.

First-team coach Lee Bullen is currently in temporary charge of Wednesday as their Championship campaign draws closer, and he has already thrown his hat in the ring for the role on a permanent basis.

It is understood Wednesday have received over 100 applications for the coveted role, while the club have sounded out the likes of Chris Hughton and Tony Pulis over the vacancy.

Furthermore, latest reports from Portugal have claimed Wolves assistant manager Rui Silva is also in contention for the role with Owls owner Dejphon Chansiri assessing candidates from home and abroad.

The Owls kick off the new season a week Saturday when they travel to the Madejski Stadium to face Reading.

The verdict

This seems a sensible time frame for Wednesday bosses to put on their manager search, as the sooner they get a new manager appointed the better.

Bruce's departure will have seriously affected the Owls' preparations for the new season, but they can limit the damage by making a quick and sensible appointment.

By getting a new manager in place before next weekend, Wednesday will also be leaving some time for the new man to delve into the transfer market before the window closes.

Admittedly, he would not have much time to sound out new recruits but it at least means he will have some sort of say on how the squad looks for the season ahead.
