Reading seem set to appoint Rio Ave boss Jose Gomes as Paul Clement's successor and the appointment could be confirmed within the next 24 hours.

The Reading Chronicle have revealed that the news coming from Portugal suggests a deal has been agreed between the clubs for around 1m euros.

The 48-year-old has vast experience after working across the world, from the UAE to Hungary but he is now back in his homeland and doing a fine job with Rio Ave.

Despite working on a limited budget, he has taken the side to sixth in the Portuguese top-flight and his work hasn't gone unnoticed.

Should the deal go through as expected, he will be taking over a Reading side that are seriously struggling in the Championship and in a relegation battle.

The Royals are currently 21st in the table and only outside the drop zone on goal difference after a tough campaign so far.

It seems unlikely that Gomes would take charge for Saturday's game against Middlesbrough, meaning his first game would be against relegation rivals Millwall on Boxing Day.

The Verdict

Reading have taken their time as they search for a new manager and everyone connected to the club will be glad that it's nearly over.

Only time will tell as to whether Gomes is the right man for the job but he will bring new ideas and an excitement to the club that has been lacking.

He will need to make an immediate impact, though, as he is walking into a very difficult situation.
