Sunderland caretaker manager Andrew Taylor will take charge of their game with Burton Albion tomorrow as their search for a new manager continues.

The Black Cats are only two points outside the play-off places, and have a game in hand on the three sides directly above them, but sacked Phil Parkinson on Sunday, two days after his final game at Fleetwood.

Sunderland could only draw at Highbury, extending their winless run to five matches, which has included a disappointing home defeat to MK Dons, which came six days after the North East outfit were dumped out of the FA Cup by League Two Mansfield Town at the Stadium of Light.

Whilst the former Premier League outfit haven't yet replaced Parkinson, Sky Sports' Keith Downie revealed on Twitter that there have been 'dozens' of applicants for the job, which shouldn't come as much of a surprise given the calibre of names that have previously managed the Black Cats.

Dowie also confirmed that Taylor will be in charge for tomorrow's game, but Sunderland will no doubt be looking to have someone in place before they host Wigan in League One on Saturday.

The Verdict

This shouldn't come as a surprise. Sunderland might be currently down in the third-tier, but they're still a massive football club, and therefore are always going plenty of applicants for the job.

But this is the Black Cats' third season at this level, which means it's paramount they get this next appointment right - especially with the Stadium of Light outfit still within touching-distance of the top-six and with plenty to play for this term.
