Manchester United are edging closer to securing the signing of Swansea winger, Daniel James, although they will have to pay more than originally planned according to the Evening Standard.

The report claims that the Red Devils will have to pay £20m to sign the Welshman, who was hugely impressive in his breakthrough season with the Swans.

He scored four league goals and was on hand to provide seven assists for Swansea last season, as they finished 10th in the Championship.

It had previously been claimed by Sky Sports that a deal between the two clubs was close to being completed, but it has emerged that the two clubs struggled to agree a fee for the youngster.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's side were thought to be wanting to pay in the region of £10m for James, but they have had to act swiftly to sign him after French side, AS Monaco registered their interest according to the Evening Standard.

Manchester United are wanting to add more British players to their ranks, and they see James as one of their top targets heading into next season.

It's set to be an interesting summer ahead at Old Trafford, with wholesale changes potentially on the cards as they look to rebuild ahead of next year's campaign.

The Man United boss evidently sees James as a player with a bright future ahead of him, although it remains to be seen as to whether he will be a regular starter.

The Verdict:

This will be slightly frustrating for the Red Devils.

James is obviously a player with quality, but I'm not sure he's worth £20m!

But given that Monaco have registered their interest in signing him, this will only see his price tag rise, and Man United will be hoping to get this deal over the line as soon as possible.
