A fresh update has emerged about Sheffield Wednesday pending EFL charge as The Telegraph has reported that the Owls are set to face a hearing in July.

Back in November, the Yorkshire club were charged with misconduct by the EFL, relating to breaches the profitability and sustainability rules over the sale of Hillsborough.

The Owls have strongly denied the charges from the EFL but, according to The Telegraph, will face an independent disciplinary commission in July.

It has been suggested that Wednesday could face a severe punishment if found guilty, with possible sanctions including a fine, a points deduction or a transfer embargo.

The charge itself is in relation to the £60 million sale of Hillsborough a company owned by Wednesday owner Dejphon Chansiri, which allowed the club to stay within P&S guidelines in the 2017/18 season.

It is understood that the issue relates to the nature of the sale and the valuation of the stadium.

Originally, the EFL had charged Chansiri and a number of senior club officials as well but those have since been dropped.

It remains to be seen whether any potential punishments will impact the Owls in the current campaign or if they will only apply to future seasons.

The Verdict

This is good news for Wednesday. The whole situation is a really concerning one but it has been hanging over them for some time now, so it's good to have a timeline.

With the current crisis, you feel it seems a little unlikely that this hearing will take place in July.

However, if it does, it may mean that everything could be wrapped up before the start of the 2020/21 campaign, which would be positive whatever the result may be.
