Sunderland may be set to make a surprise addition late on transfer deadline day as it has been reported that there is work going on in the background to secure another signing.

The Black Cats have made three signings so far this month, in Phil Parkinson's first transfer window since taking charge of the club.

Striker Kyle Lafferty and defender Bailey Wright are among the notable additions but it seems the North East club are not done yet.

Sunderland are understood to be close to agreeing a deal for a second loan from Bristol City, this time for forward Antoine Semenyo, as well as bringing in a left-wing back–most likely Swansea City's Declan John.

James Hunter from the Chronicle has reported that in addition to those two moves, there may be one more signing completed before the window closes.

Hunter has claimed that work is going on in the background at the club and that there are no guarantees that this surprise move will happen.

After struggling early on in the season, Sunderland have been in impressive form in recent weeks–winning five of their last seven League One games and climbing to fifth in the table.

The Verdict

This should be an exciting update for fans of the North East club as it seems that the Black Cats are pushing hard to get the most out of this window.

After some teething pains, Parkinson has got his side firing and they're right back in the race for promotion.

That being said, it makes sense for them to add as much quality as possible ahead of a difficult run-in.

It's going to be very interesting to see how the day develops for Sunderland.
