Sheffield Wednesday manager Garry Monk has confirmed that contract talks are underway with left-back Morgan Fox and a deal will be done ‘ASAP’.

The Owls are currently in a sticky situation with regards to many of their first-team players being out of contract in the summer. One of those players is Wales international Morgan Fox, who has been a revelation this season under Garry Monk.

Having been on the periphery of the Wednesday starting 11 since joining from Charlton in 2017, putting in largely inconsistent performances on the left side of the defence.

However, since Monk’s appointment, Fox has become one of the most dependable members of the Wednesday side and hasn’t missed a single game since mid-October, managing 18 consecutive appearances in the league.

Fox has chipped in with a couple of goals this season along with an assist in his last game, crossing from the left, right onto the head of an on-rushing Jacob Murphy.

Speaking in his pre-match press conference - as quoted by Rob Staton - Monk commented on Fox’s current contract situation and outlined that a positive outcome was imminent:

The left-back would have been free to leave in the summer if not for a new contract and it would appear that he has agreed to the terms of a new deal.

The verdict

It was an absolute must that Wednesday tied down Fox to a new deal, in order to stop him from being free to leave to a Championship rival at the end of the season.

There was undoubted interest in his signature, regardless of his contract winding down, just purely on the basis that he has been in immense form for the Owls.

The problem now for Wednesday is that they still have multiple first-team players that are out of contract at the end of the season and this needs addressing before the players look elsewhere.

It’s difficult for Wednesday to keep hold of some of these players, given their current financial constraints, coupled with the high wages that some of these players are one, so they need to prioritise, thus Fox is the first to be signed on.
