Olympiacos could be set to reignite their interest in Nottingham Forest midfielder Joao Carvalho, according to Greek media outlet SDNA.

The 22-year-old has endured a mixed spell at the City Ground since becoming the club's record signing last summer, arriving from Benfica for a fee of £13.2m.

The attacking midfielder has scored six goals and added nine assists in 61 appearances for the Reds, and his performances have often flattered to deceive.

Carvalho has been in and out of the team under Sabri Lamouchi this term, making 21 appearances in all competitions with 11 of those coming from off the bench.

Trabzonspor were previously linked with a move for Carvalho, as were Evangelos Marinakis' other club, Olympiacos.

But now, it is claimed by SDNA that the Greek side could now reignite their interest in Carvalho, with Daniel Podence said to be closing in on a move to Wolves (Sky Sports).

This would leave Olympiacos lacking a creative spark in midfield, and SDNA claim that Carvalho could be a potential replacement for the midfielder.

The report also says: "Developments are underway at Olympiacos, and Daniel Podence’s impending transfer to Wolves paves the way for Joao Carvalho’s acquisition.”

“If the scenario with Carvalho does not progress again, then Olympiacos will look to the market for extravagance."

Forest sit fifth in the Championship, five points off second place with a game in hand on the teams above them, after a 3-1 win over Luton at the weekend.

The Verdict

Carvalho is a player that has been talked about for some time now, with his future at Forest certainly up in the air.

Let's be honest, he has been massively underwhelming since arriving at the City Ground, but it doesn't help that Lamouchi plays him out wide rather than through the middle.

It's a massive decision for Forest - do they cash in on Carvalho and recuperate the money they paid for him, or keep him and try to get the best out of him?
