Premier League side Southampton are another club to have made enquiries for Nottingham Forest defender Matty Cash, according to Sky Sports' Lyall Thomas.

The 22-year-old has been arguably Forest's most impressive performer this season, with the natural winger establishing himself as one the best full-backs in the Championship.

Cash hit the ground running at the start of the season, scoring in the opening day defeat to West Brom before going on to make 29 appearances in all competitions for Forest.

After a series of impressive displays for the Reds under Sabri Lamouchi, Cash was rewarded with a new three-and-a-half year deal in November, but he is still attracting interest from some very high-profile clubs.

It is claimed that whilst AC Milan have made enquiries for the defender, and are willing to pay around £15m for his signature, Southampton have also made enquiries for the homegrown ace.

Forest will obviously be reluctant to lose their star-man in what is such a crucial part of the season, especially after only securing his future not so long ago.

The Reds sit fifth in the Championship table, but will move to third with a win over Reading at the City Ground tonight.

The Verdict

Cash has been exceptional for Forest this season, showing real maturity when moving from his natural position on the wing back to defence.

He has never looked out of place and has all the hallmarks of a modern-day wing-back. He is obviously very dangerous going forward on the overlap, but defensively, one-on-one, he is one of the best in the division.

He is a class act, and Forest will be relieved that they managed to tie him down to a new deal when they did, as even if he did leave this month, they could demand so much money for his signature.

Forest need to show some ambition and keep hold of the 22-year-old, though, as he will be a massive player for them in years to come as they look to make a long-awaited return to the Premier League.
