Millwall will face competition from fellow Championship sides as they look to sign Charlie Cresswell from Leeds United on loan.

The centre-back is fifth choice at Elland Road, so he is expected to leave next season to try and get regular game time elsewhere. And, it had been suggested that a move to The Den was close, with the two clubs said to be in 'advanced talks' over a temporary switch.

However, whilst the Londoners are interested in securing the England U21 international, Leeds Live have revealed that it isn't going to be straightforward for Millwall.

That's because they state there is rival interest in the player from the second tier, although they don't state which specific clubs are in the race.

The report adds that Cresswell is expected to link up with the Leeds squad in the next week when they return for pre-season training before a decision will be made on his future, so nothing is imminent on that front.

Gary Rowett is keen to strengthen his defence after Dan Ballard returned to Arsenal following a successful loan spell.

The verdict

In truth, this probably isn't a surprise as if Cresswell is available, which appears to be the case, you would expect plenty of Championship interest.

Even though he only made five Premier League appearances last season, the youngster has quality and it's simply about showing that week in, week out.

So, Leeds are right to send him on loan as it's ideal for his development and you can be sure Millwall will do all they can to win the battle for his signature.
