Nottingham Forest have all but finalised the deal to take Lewis O'Brien to the City Ground but are now looking at alternatives to Huddersfield Town teammate Harry Toffolo, according to John Percy.

It was previously reported that a deal in excess of £10m had been agreed to take both O'Brien and Toffolo to the City Ground with Steve Cooper seeing both impress in the Championship during the 2021/22 campaign.

O'Brien, 23, stood out as one of the best midfielders in the division and was one of the first names on the teamsheet under Carlos Corberan, with the Terriers batting off interest to retain their key man last summer.

However, they won't be as lucky this time around with the 23-year-old already undertaking a medical and doing media interviews with an agreement seemingly close to being announced.

Toffolo, meanwhile, may not be heading to the East Midlands with the Reds now believed to be taking a look at other left wing-back targets including Real Betis' Alex Moreno.

According to Percy, a double deal for the duo was agreed on Sunday evening but a U-turn has now plunged this agreement for Toffolo into doubt.

The latter recorded six goals and recorded seven assists in the second tier last season and would have come in as a competitor for Omar Richards, who arrived from Bayern Munich earlier this month.

The Verdict:

This is a boost for Huddersfield who will be desperate to keep hold of Toffolo considering how much he contributed going forward for the Terriers during 2021/22.

Considering the likes of Josh Koromo and Jordan Rhodes didn't manage to get in and amongst the goals as frequently as they would have wanted to last term, Toffolo helped to compensate for that and proved to be a constant threat on the left.

Also proving to be competent defensively, he really is the full package and it would have been a remarkable achievement if Forest paid just £10m for both, even with the wing-back only having one year left on his deal.

The fact the Reds do have other irons in the fire will reassure their supporters though - because an alternative to Omar Richards is certainly needed if they want to ensure they have enough depth in this area.

Richie Laryea may be able to fill in - but he arguably needs to stay on the right-hand to step in for Neco Williams, in the event he sustains an injury, is suspended or suffers a loss in form.
