More details have emerged regarding Birmingham City’s punishment from the EFL that was handed out today.

The headline of the outcome was that the Blues will be given a nine-point deduction, taking them down to within just five points of the relegation zone with just eight matches left to play.

But it has now become clear that the punishment also means that the club will have all embargoes lifted at the end of the season, reports Rob Dorsett of Sky Sports News.

Previously they had been under a ‘soft embargo’ meaning they were only allowed to sign players using funds raised from other sales.

Now, they are able to negotiate new contracts including, as Dorsett pointed out, for club captain Michael Morrison.

The Blues have lost their previous four matches in the Championship heading into the international break and face a tough test over the next month.

West Bromwich Albion, Leeds United and Sheffield United make up the club’s next three opponents as they look to avoid slipping into League One.

The verdict

This is potentially a very decent outcome for Birmingham.

Basically having their immediate problems wiped at the expense of nine points seems like a very attractive offer.

However, that will only be if they stay in the Championship and they will need to pick up some points from that tough run of fixtures.
