Laurence Bassini's proposed takeover of Bolton is set to collapse after he failed to provide proof of funds before a deadline set by Ken Anderson.

The Times report that the current Wanderers owner had set a 5pm deadline earlier today for Bassini to show he had the money available to complete a deal after doubts emerged over whether he could.

And, the deadline passed without the former Watford chief contacting the club so the deal could fall through. That may not be a surprise to some given his history as the 49-year-old has been declared bankrupt twice and he has been previously banned by the Football League.

An agreement was reached 12 days ago with Bassini pledging to pay the outstanding March wage bill to the players and coaching staff but that still hasn't been paid.

As a result, the squad refused to play Saturday's Championship game against Brentford, which was subsequently called off.

There could be further issues down the line as that match hasn't been rearranged yet ahead of what should be the final fixture of the season against Nottingham Forest on Sunday.

The Verdict

This is another twist for Bolton fans to deal with and they will be growing increasingly frustrated that this mess hasn't been sorted out.

Bassini's history means people were always going to be sceptical about his involvement and it appears those concerns were valid.

They will be back to square one if this does fall through and they will be desperate for another interested party to emerge and to take the club from Anderson.
