Aston Villa boss Dean Smith is reportedly eyeing a swoop for Brentford midfielder, Romaine Sawyers ahead of the January transfer window, according to a report from Football Insider.

Sawyers previously worked under Smith when he was in charge of the Bees, and the Villa boss is seemingly looking to work with the energetic midfielder again this season.

Smith first brought Sawyers to Brentford, and has also worked with the midfielder at Walsall and many Aston Villa fans will be hoping that he can rediscover the form he had previously shown under Smith if he is to move to Villa Park.

The 27-year-old has been ever-present in the Brentford team this season, but they have struggled to kick-on since Smith departed for Villa Park, and they are now in a relegation fight.

A source has also told Football Insider that Dean Smith is set to add further additions to his squad as they look to add some much-needed depth to aid their bid for a promotion push back to the Premier League this season.

Sawyers is one of the best attacking midfielders in the Championship and he is likely to be looking for a move to a team with a better chance of gaining promotion to the Premier League.

The Verdict:

I could have seen this one a mile off.

Sawyers is an excellent attacking midfielder and without him, Brentford would occupy one of the relegation places.

His energy in the midfield is something that would compliment John McGinn perfectly at Aston Villa, and they would boast one of the most creative and dangerous midfield's in the Championship.

Sawyers would be the missing piece in the jigsaw for Aston Villa's promotion bid this season.
