Swansea City slipped to a stoppage-time defeat against Fulham on Wednesday evening as Aleksandar Mitrovic breached the visitors' defence to hand the Cottagers a 1-0 success.

Steve Cooper's side thought they had done enough to claim a valuable point in south-west London when Freddie Woodman saved Mitrovic's 88th-minute penalty, but the Serbian striker nodded home Aboubakar Kamara's cross to clinch the win at the death.

Swansea are now sitting five points adrift of the play-offs heading into their key clash with Blackburn on Saturday, and the Welsh side will feel aggrieved following the referee's decision to controversially deny the Swans two second-half penalties at the Cottage.

This frustration was compounded in the closing stages as Fulham were awarded a spot-kick after Connor Roberts was adjudged to have fouled Neeskens Kebano, but Woodman guessed correctly as he dived to his right to keep out Mitrovic's effort from the spot.

This may have not been enough to earn the Swans anything from the game eventually, but the penalty save will have boosted Woodman's confidence following some of the criticism he received during Swansea's recent five-game winless run.

The Newcastle loanee

/">took to Instagram after the game to comment on the "highs and lows" of the Fulham clash, while he suggested the Swans are now looking ahead to their clash with Blackburn rather than dwelling on the result against the Cottagers.

Woodman has been a regular feature in the Swansea side following his season-long loan move from Newcastle back in the summer, with the 22-year-old having played every minute of league action for Cooper's side during the campaign.

The Verdict

Swansea will still be feeling gutted following their last-gap defeat against Scott Parker's side at the Cottage, particularly given the visitors produced such an improved performance in the second period which also saw the referee deny them two penalties.

Woodman will be feeling particularly hurt given it looked like he had become the hero following his double save for the penalty, but the stopper definitely further proved himself to supporters following a couple of mistakes in Swansea's recent matches.

The Swans must now turn all their attention towards their meeting with Blackburn over the weekend, particularly seeing as three points from this clash would go some way towards forgetting the heartbreak of Wednesday night.
