With Derby looking to lower their wage budget, there will be a natural turn towards younger players.

In light of this, they should look to take full advantage of Frank Lampard’s Chelsea connections and look to secure some quality youth players. It may prove enough to encourage players to drop down. One such target should be Tammy Abraham.

The 20-year-old had a year to remember at Swansea. On the back of scoring 26 goals for Bristol City in 2016/17, he scored eight and made five assists across all competitions. It was a promising start given that he had not started a game in the top flight before. This was accompanied by a brace of international caps as he featured in friendlies against Germany and Brazil.

Admittedly, he faded in the second half of the season, tending to come off the bench, as the Swans were unable to beat the drop. Yet this should not overshadow what was overall a good season. After having a taste of top-flight action, it may take some convincing for Abraham to drop back down a division.

However, Abraham has been at Chelsea since he was 8. For most of that time, Lampard was one of the most influential players at the club. He remains a club legend. That alone should be enough for Abraham to listen to him. Whether he can convince him is another matter. If he can, Derby can feel safe in selling off the likes of Matej Vydra while retaining a potent goal threat.
