Frank Lampard is set to make John Terry his first signing as Derby boss with the former Chelsea defender set to take a massive pay cut to link up with his close friend.

The pair played together for years with Chelsea and England and according to the Daily Star, Terry has agreed to play under Lampard at Pride Park next season.

Terry has just been released by Aston Villa, where he was believed to be picking up £60k a week and such a figure is far above what Derby are willing to pay, with the East Midlands side facing FFP issues of their own.

However, the report states the 37-year old will take a much lower salary to join the Rams.

Lampard refused to comment on whether he would sign Terry at his unveiling yesterday, although he did admit he had spoken to the defender about life in the Championship.

I had conversations with him this season about how he was getting on and about the Championship. He will definitely be there for me. We are close."

The Verdict

This is a move that makes a lot of sense given the friendship between the pair and it would be a good move for both, providing Terry does take a pay cut.

He has proven he can still play in the second tier, whilst Lampard would love a character and leader like Terry in the team and dressing room.

The only obstacle is the finances but this report suggests it won't be an issue so this would be a smart capture from Derby.
