Frank Lampard was noncommittal when quizzed on the possibility of John Terry joining him at Derby County this summer.

Derby moved to appoint Lampard as their new manager yesterday, with the 39-year-old agreeing a three-year deal with the Rams ahead of the 2018/19 campaign.

The news that Lampard will take his first steps into management has coincided with Terry’s Aston Villa departure.

Terry will leave Villa Park after just 12 months, with confirmation coming earlier this week, following Villa’s failure to win promotion.

Lampard was quizzed on the possibility of signing Terry at Derby this summer, with the new Derby boss remaining coy on a potential deal.

When asked about Terry’s availability, Lampard told the Daily Mail: “I did notice that. I haven’t spoken to John. I got a message from him this morning. I think at the moment he is in Greece on holiday.”

Terry featured on 33 occasions for Villa last season across all competitions, including 32 times in the Sky Bet Championship.

The 37-year-old scored one goal in claret and blue, as he captained Villa to fourth in the Championship table.

Terry featured for 90 minutes in last Saturday’s play-off final, but was unable to guide Villa to promotion, with Tom Cairney’s goal enough to secure Fulham a place in the Premier League.

The Verdict

Lampard was never going to give too much away in his first press conference as Derby manager, but will have known questions would come his way regarding Terry.

The two shared a strong relationship at Chelsea, where they were extremely successful.

Lampard would surely consider bringing the 37-year-old on board if it was affordable, which would be huge for the Rams.

However, financing a move for Terry isn’t easy due to his wage demands.
