Frank Lampard was today confirmed as Derby County manager with the 39-year old ready to embark on his first managerial job.

The Chelsea legend had been linked with the Ipswich post in the previous weeks however he was announced as Gary Rowett's successor at a press conference today.

Even though he had a glittering playing career, nobody knows how he will do in the dugout. However, he offered his thoughts on the task in hand at Derby when speaking to the media today and revealed what he plans to do.

"I want to promote youth and I want a balance to the squad. There will be a process of evaluating the squad. I’m not coming in to fix something that is broken, I’m coming to improve."

Former boss Rowett also mentioned the age of the Rams squad as a criticism in the past, with a lot of experienced players in the side.

Clearly, Lampard will look to change that and he will be assisted by Jody Morris who has enjoyed huge success as a youth coach at Chelsea in recent years.

The Verdict

This is what Derby fans will want to hear and Lampard came across very well in his first interview as boss.

He has acknowledged the side have done well over the years whilst also highlighting where they need to improve and they do need more energy and youth in the side.

As he says though, he will now evaluate the squad in pre-season as he looks to build a squad that can challenge for the play-offs.
