Derby County boss Frank Lampard has backed Mason Mount to take his England call-up in his stride, after he was a surprise inclusion in Gareth Southgate's squad.

The Three Lions boss had been watching Mount play for the Rams ahead of a potential call-up and it was revealed yesterday that the 19-year-old had been selected.

It is a reward for a fantastic start to the season for Mount, who has become a key player for Lampard's side as they look to push for promotion.

And, the manager, who won 106 caps for England, told Derbyshire Live the call-up was deserved and he backed the teenager to hold his own at that level: "I don't think training will faze him, I don't think the names around him will faze him, he is too good for that."

As well as that, the Chelsea legend warned Mount that he needs to maintain the early-season levels if he wants to remain in the squad: "When you are in the England squad or just getting in it, there are only two things that can happen. One is you carry on and stay in it, the other is that you drop out!"

The Verdict

It's good to see that Southgate is giving players from the Championship a chance and whilst you could argue others should be ahead of Mount, he is a very good player.

Lampard clearly recognises that and he deserves credit as well as the player because he has given him the freedom to express himself.

It will be a fine experience for Mount and will help his confidence when playing for Derby.
