Derby County boss Frank Lampard has issued a word of caution about 23-year-old striker Jack Marriott.

The capture from Peterborough made his debut in the League Cup tie with Oldham, but Lampard has warned of placing too much responsibility on his shoulders at this early stage of his Rams career.

"There is going to be a lot to come at this club for Jack," Lampard told the Derby Telegraph. "I feel he is going to be a big goal scorer for this club but we must be a bit careful with him at the beginning and not heap too much on him."

After being released by Ipswich, Marriott found himself in League Two with Luton Town, before a move to Peterborough in League One.

He made his third step up in as many seasons when he switched to Price Park, but Lampard warned the player needs time to adapt.

"There will be some adapting for him but because of his personality, he wants to adapt. He gets in the box, he's always in there. He is hungry for goals, and I love players like that."

Marriott scored 33 times in 56 matches for Posh, adding to his 28 strikes in 91 for Luton the season before. He's also spent time on loan at Colchester and Woking whilst a youth at Portman Road.

The Verdict

Marriott was hot property this summer, but his new manager is trying to play down the hype as he settles in.

That is in sharp contrast to the Peterborough camp, who played up his ability trying to inflate the price tag. Such is football.

At 23, with the record he has, Marriott seems to have a big future and in Frank Lampard, he now has a manager who has seen and done everything there is as a player. That will only aid his development.
