Frank Lampard was full of praise for his side after their victory over Premier League side Southampton as Derby advanced into the next round of the FA Cup.

Goals from Harry Wilson and Martyn Waghorn saw the Rams fight back from two goals down for a second consecutive time against the Saints to take the game to extra time.

The original tie saw Ralph Hasenhuttl’s team throw away a 2-0 advantage as the Championship side secured a replay at St Mary’s.

Lightning struck twice with the Rams doing the same on this occasion, but with a winner decided on the night, the game meandered to a penalty shootout.

Richard Keogh scored the decisive penalty to see off the top-flight outfit 5-3 on spot-kicks to set up a fourth-round tie with League One’s Accrington Stanley.

And after the game, Lampard praised his players for their endeavour to progress in the competition when talking to Match of the Day.

"I'm delighted for the team, for this squad, the work they put in to come through after VAR went against us," Lampard told the BBC.

"They were great penalties and showed great courage. They were winners today.

"The way they took those penalties showed the character. I am so proud of them.

"We've had a tough patch of games in the league; the lads are working so hard, they did it again tonight.

“It takes a lot to come back against Premier League opposition, but I thought we were outstanding throughout the game.

"A big thanks to the fans who travelled, as well, they were a huge support and helped us get over the line."

The verdict

Lampard has every right to be proud of his players, having repeated, and bettered a feat they achieved just over a week ago.

To come from two goals down against a Premier League side once is pretty good going, but to do so twice in two games is sensational for a team from the Championship.

Impressive going and it shows how far the Rams have come since the start of the season, and how well Lampard is doing in the role as manager for the first time.

Their fourth-round tie with Accrington Stanley is certainly winnable, but now they play the role that the Saints did in the previous tie and will need to avoid complacency if they are to go further into the competition.
