Derby County striker David Nugent has been leading by example for the Rams during their pre-season, according to manager Frank Lampard.

In an interview with Derbyshire Live, the new head coach at Pride Park hailed the work of the 33-year-old forward, after his side's 2-1 victory over Wolverhampton Wanderers, in which Nugent had an exceptional individual performance, scoring the opening goal.

Lampard stated: “David Nugent pre-season, wow! From the moment that we came in we have been amazed at his work rate in training every day, the smile on his face and his professionalism.

"He has been incredible in terms of running the line and every day in training he is the same. You almost want to tell him to slow down sometimes, because he will chase everything.

"He sets the tone of our team in how he works from the front. He closes down, and everybody closes down behind him, and we know that he can score as well. You need somebody like that up there."

Nugent has started both of Derby’s home friendlies against Premier League sides Wolves and Southampton, and looks set to feature for the Rams in their opening Championship fixture at Reading.

The Verdict

Despite his age, Nugent still continues to impress for Derby and looks set to lead the Rams out in the first game of the new Championship season.

Having beaten now Premier League side Wolves in pre-season, it will give Lampard’s side confidence going into this campaign.

The Rams will be hoping they can improve on last season’s disappointing play-off defeat, and perhaps Nugent can provide that little spark they need.
