Benik Afobe has blasted the club's Head of Recruitment Kevin Thelwell for claiming that the striker no longer wanted to play for the club, and wasn't giving his full commitment to the team, according to the Express & Star.

Thelwell has been at the club for eight years and was quick to criticise the England under-21 star who secured a £10m move to Premier League Bournemouth last month.

He said of the 22-year-old: "You could list our entire first team squad and see that they were trying. Benik was no longer trying to play for us and that was undermining everything we were trying to achieve."

Afobe was quick to respond to the hurtful claims by Thelwell as he published a series of tweets from his official Twitter account in an attempt to clarify the situation. He tweeted:-

Wolves Chief Executive Jez Moxey also waged in on the debate by corroborating Thelwell's claims that the striker didn't want to play for the club.

He said: "We wanted to underline his place in the Wolves team. The reality is that he didn’t want to play for Wolves.

“We wanted him to maintain his commitment to us so he could help us reach our goals. He wanted to leave, his advisors, his agents, his family and Norwich did everything they could to get Benik out of the club. He’s now (earning) four times his wage.”

Afobe joined Wolves from Arsenal in January last year and went on to score an impressive 13 goals in 21 games, as the club narrowly missed out on a place in the play-offs on goal difference.

As speculation of a move to the top flight intensified, Afobe finally sealed his dream move as he was snapped by Bournemouth. Under Eddie Howe, the striker has notched 3 goals in his first 5 appearances for the club as he firmly settled into life in the Premier League.

Afobe also tweeted that he still had a good relationship with the Wolves fans and thanked them for their support during his time at the club.

Wolves fans, what do you make of Thelwell's claims that Afobe was no longer putting 100% effort into his performances in a Wolves shirt? Do you think that Afobe no longer wanted to play for the club and this was shown in his under-par performances? Do you think that the club is trying to make a scapegoat out of him?
